Day 180 Dribs and Drabs

Thank you to Michele who awarded me the Stylish Blogger Award (see the Award & Reward tab).  No one has ever accused me of being stylish before, so this was a real treat!  The rules for this are:

1. Post and link back to the person who awarded this to me (that would be Michele, as mentioned/linked above).

2. Share 7 things about myself.

3. Pass on the love, by awarding 15 other worthy bloggers this honor (or as many as I can).  And,

4.  Contact the award recipients to let them know of the award!


So, here are seven things about myself -

1. I am the only one in my family to hold a college degree.  I worked my way through college on my own, and graduated with zero debt.  However, I can never mention anything about that experience or education, because several family members are sensitive about the subject of advanced education - therefore, I've never said a word to the family that referenced anything to do with college, since graduating decades ago.

2. I make it a point to reread Dr. King's letter from the Birmingham jail (1963) every MLK Day.  It is intelligent, insightful, thought-provoking, and could apply to many situations, not limited to Civil Rights alone.  It applies to everyone, no matter their creed or color.  He wrote, just in part,  "... We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed. ... there are two types of laws: just and unjust.  I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws.  One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws.  Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. ... A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.  An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. ... Any law that uplifts human personality is just.  Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.  ..."  Amen, Dr. King!

3.  I want the Packers to win over the Bears, and think a Packers-Steelers Superbowl showdown would be the most entertaining and well-matched game, of the remaining playoff teams.  That said, I was absolutely impressed with the Jets yesterday, and am in awe of their defense coverage.  Where did that come from?!!  (Can you tell I'm a football fan?)

4. Shellfish is highly toxic to my body, and shrimp in particular.  I carry an EpiPen in case of emergency. 

5. I am in need of a haircut, and plan to get my long locks chopped to shoulder-length before next weekend.

6. My favorite piece of furniture at home is a small reproduction bookcase by Althorp. 

7. I would like to visit Philadelphia and New York City one day.  I've not been to either place.

The remaining rules (3 & 4) require more thought.  I rarely get around to those tasks, to be honest.  It isn't that there aren't a multitude of deserving blogs.  I just find it daunting to hunt down bloggers who haven't yet received the award in question, and then when I do, I worry that I'm putting some sort of obligation on them that they may not want.  So, I'll do what I usually do.  I'll "get around to it" - or not.  Things are a bit busy these days, but I will try.  When you get to big numbers - like 15 - it gets very difficult to pass it on to someone who hasn't had it yet.  And maybe that is the point?  Well, if you are stylish, and haven't had the award yet, drop me a note!!

  1. Epi-pen carrier here, too. Since 1997. Scallops and tuna, on separate occasions, landed me in ER/Urgent care. Then doc said, "Ma'am, you need to stay away from ALL seafood."

    Horrible. I ate seafood 3 to 4 or more times a week. Love the stuff.Miami has amazing seafood.

    Hurts to see others eating shrimp and fish sometimes. Sigh.

    Oh, well. I was the first of my siblings to get a degree. My parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles didn't have one, either. My first cousins (older than me) studied and they were the first. But of my siblings, I"m the only one.

    Now, more of the kids have gotten theirs...

  2. I, too,was super impressed with the Jets yesterday. Although I am a VIKES fan, I would love to see the Packers go to the SB, because I think that kids Aaron is something.

    Too bad fro your family that they are not able to embrace and learn by your example of higher ed.

  3. That would be very hard for me too if i couldn't eat shellfish!!
    I have to post about the award as well and i agree with you, i hate having to pick other blogs when there are so many in blogland that i like :)

  4. I'm sorry you don't feel safe to talk about your degree around family. I can relate. Not about the degree, but I can't talk about many things to my family, they judge me or think I am judging them, it just gets old.

    I think I will post 7 things about myself on my blog too! Maybe tomorow. But I dont want an award, I used to get those and try to distribute, but it just was like you say, daunting. So when someone tags me, I do whatever the task is, but never pass it on. I post that whoever wants to take part in this, can.
    I love shrimp, I cant imagine not being able to eat it!!!!

    I know you are married, how long? Do you guys have kids? Pets? Plants? When will you post a picture on here of yourself? (not just a body part I mean) What do you do for a living? What are your hobbies? What are your hopes and dreams? There, done. LOL

  6. Okay, Nancy, this is for you (since you asked):

    We've been married over 20 blissful years, but dating and engagement years included, we've been a couple for just under 27 years.

    We have no children, unless you count Lucy (our pug) ... she lords over the domain.

    Plants? Yes. In fact, I've had one in particular for 32 years, but we have others too.

    When will I post a face photo? Good question!

    I manage a small office.

    My hobbies are varied. My favorite is genealogy research. If you want to find out some interesting family history, I'm the gal to discover it. I like history. I like a good mystery. And genealogy is BOTH. LOL I enjoy cooking (and collect cookbooks), and photography too. I once had two of my own dark-room-developed photos chosen for a formal public exhibit. That was fun! If travel can be considered a hobby, I would list that. I'm well traveled - though (oddly) I've never been to NYC. It is on my list of places to visit one day. I love art of all types, and manage to purchase something at least once a year. Life is too short to not surround ourselves with beautiful things and amazing people, right?

    Hopes and dreams? Can you be more specific? I mean, I could answer "to live a happy and meaningful life" but that is pretty generic. I like "interesting" but lean toward traditional. I enjoy nature. I appreciate talent and admire skill. I give more than I get. I spend too much time on others, and rarely enough on myself. I take obligations seriously. I honor my word when given. I appreciate good food (too much) and am attracted by humor. I love to laugh, and laugh often. I regret more the things I didn't do, than the things I did. I believe in the Holy Trinity. I miss my mother-in-law as much as my own mother (both have passed away). And I avoid my sister at all costs (she has issues).

    So, that is the good, bad and ugly of it, Nancy. Sorry you asked now? Hmmmm? LOL
